Event Description
In conjunction with Bealtaine and as part of their exhibition Walking in the Way at South Tipperary Arts Centre, artists Pauline Cummins and Frances Mezzetti will bring the experience of performance art to a cross-generational group of women through this one-day workshop which will focus on the gendered experience of public space. The aim is to facilitate a sense of empowerment, to allow women from Clonmel and the surrounding area to experience a different form of embodiment in public space. This will enable individual art works to emerge through, with and from the participants and will afford the participants the opportunity to interrogate their own position/place. They will investigate this through movement workshop, live performance, mentoring and photography made on site.
Walking in the Way is a series of performances by Pauline Cummins and Frances Mezzetti where the artists appear as men. Women throughout their lives experience vulnerability in public space. In order to show the freedom that men have to inhabit public spaces in ways that women do not, they choose to dress as men and walk around areas of international cities.
