This three days online workshop with artist Ida Mitrani is an introduction to Botanical Drawing and Painting. The workshops will take place on May 16th, 18th, and 23rd from 2pm to 3:30pm. The workshops are booked as a series.
The course involves a range of drawing and painting exercises using graphite pencils and watercolour paints. A series of practical demonstrations will include deconstruction, construction, and measurement of a leaf and a flower head, while pencil and brush techniques will also be covered. There will be an emphasis on observational drawing studies and colour chart preparation for accurate depiction of the subject.
The students will be encouraged to create small works to build up their confidence while working at their own pace.
Templates and supporting material will be provided beforehand.
Breakdown of the course
Session 1 –
Drawing with pencils
In this first session you will be introduced to the drawing materials and tools used in Botanical drawing followed by some practical exercises such as creating a tonal stripe with continuous shading technique. Measuring and drawing a leaf.
Session 2 –
Painting a leaf
In the second session, you will learn how to mix realistic greens and how to paint a leaf using various watercolour techniques.
Session 3 –
Drawing and painting a white flower
In this final session, you will learn how to draw a flower head and how to mix neutral tones and beautiful greys to create delicate glazes to paint a light coloured flower.]
