The Bealtaine Book Club aims to honour and promote an Irish writer with a distinguished and lengthy career who has made a significant contribution to literature. It also aims to encourage older readers and writers and to create a greater understanding of issues impacting on older age. In 2020, the Bealtaine Book Club author is Michael Harding and the Bealtaine Book is ‘Staring at Lakes' (2014) This was selected by Libraries around Ireland as the Bealtaine Book Club book. ‘Staring At Lakes’ is an open and honest memoir about Harding’s life. How he left the priesthood in his 30s, settled in Co Leitrim with his artist wife and his crippling depression. And how, in the end, he found his way out of the darkness by accepting love and seizing the moment. THIS EVENT WILL BE PRECEDED BY READINGS FROM THE BEALTAINE WRITERS' GROUP AT 3PM - BOOKERS FOR MICHAEL HARDING WILL ALSO RECEIVE THIS LINK. Michael Harding was born in 1953 in Cavan, and is an Irish short story writer, newspaper columnist, novelist and playwright. He was a recipient of the Stewart Parker Theatre Bursary in 1990 and the Bank of Ireland/ RTE award for excellence in the Arts in the same year. He won the Hennessey Literary Award for short stories in 1980 and became a member of Aosdana in 2000. In association with the City and County Library Associations.
