Mayo County Council Arts office look forward to celebrating Bealtaine 2017. We are busy finalising our plans for May but the following is a taste of what is on offer. We are thrilled that Artist Breda Burns has been commissioned by Bealtaine Festival 2017 in partnership with Sligo Arts Office and Mayo Arts Office, to develop a sound and radio-based work, 'Archiving Activism', in response to the Bealtaine 2017 theme. A society only progresses when citizens care enough to contribute to its fabric and its future. Breda is holding a drop-in day on the 22nd of March in the Custom House Studios which is aimed at those who were involved in establishing or running art projects, festivals or exhibitions in either Mayo or Sligo from the 1970's through to the 1990's This year our programme will kick off on Sunday 23rd of April, when renowned conductor James Cavanagh will give a Masterclass to Castlebar Concert Orchestra. Other highlights include our partnership with three of our local venues, Áras Inis Gluaire (Belmullet), The Linenhall Arts Centre (Castlebar) and Ballina Arts Centre. Ontop of their own Bealtaine programming, each of the three venues will have a Bealtaine event on that is free to the public. Further details and dates to be announced. A pivotal part of our programming is having events in care nursing units in Mayo and this year will be no exception, full details to be announced. We are delighted that for the second year in a row, Mayo Arts Office will work in partnership with Midwest radio to celebrate Poetry Day Ireland, which takes place on Thursday 27th of April. Poets Geraldine Mitchell and John F Deane, will read some of their poetry on Tommy Marren’s show (96.1fm) at 9.30am. Please tune in. May is also the month for Onsight which takes place at The National Museum of Ireland –Country Life and it is a partnership between Mayo Arts Office, Mayo Artsquad and the National Museum of Ireland – Country Life. Further details of our programme to be announced shortly.
